Last week, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Berlin presented a new
book (2010) about Czernowitz, entitled "Gelebte Multikulturalität", i.e.
living/or live multiculturalism about the languages spoken in
Czernowitz, Bukowina and a little about Bessarabia now Republic of
Moldova, past and present. It is a collection of lectures contributed by
several participants at a symposium which took place in 2009 at the
University of Jena. The stress was on the variety of languages spoken,
mainly during the interbellic period, the Romanian minority and its
contribution, the German spoken and written (literature, publications,
newspapers, etc.) mentioning the role of Margul-Sperber as a mentor for
young gifted writers and poets by Paul Celan, Alfred Kittner et al.,
cultural and historical influences, and so on. There were interesting
facts and figures, and, the book seems to be of course, rather academic .
Since the authors are linguists (Association of Balkan &Romance
languages), the stress of this presentation was on the various dialects
of Romanian language in the different regions around Czernowitz.
We were unable to buy it there, the book has to be ordered. Some of the
authors were present,as well as Tanya Kloubert, a protagonist from the
film "Dieses Jahr in Czernowitz" who is now a lecturer at the University
of Jena. She concluded that unfortunately multicultural Bukowina ended
with World War II, although some efforts have been made to remind of the
past, i.e. the Poetry Festival, the Jewish Museum, etc.
Volker Koepp, who was invited, presented excerpts from his two
Czernowitz films, which the audience greatly enjoyed.
The book could not be bought at the Institute, it has to be ordered.
