Dear Czernowitzers:
While writing my memoir of growing up in Cz during the war, I came
across a scene my father described to me that you might find amusing:
When the Germans were retreating from Czernowitz in 1944, we were in
hiding and looked out to see the Germans digging in a flower bed in
front of the house.
They were wrapping their dead in newspaper and burying them in this
flower bed and covering the bed with more newspapers, then a little
dirt. My father was afraid that they were putting in explosives, but
they were too busy running away to think of that.
