Hi all,
While I am still translating the 2,815 biographies in Zylbercweig's
seven-volume "Lexicon of the Yiddish Theatre" (having already created a
database for it), I have just completed a database listing the nearly 2,000
men and women biographied in Zalmen Reyzen's four-volume "Lexicon of the
Yiddish Literature, Press and Philology", published between 1926 and 1930.
I thought you might like to know who from Bukovina is biographied in the
Reyzen volumes. Note that I am listing those who are listed as being born in
Bukovina according to the information found within their biographies at the
time, so perhaps some of those listed below were born in towns no longer in
Bukovina, but were simply born there when Bukovina was part of the Austrian
Empire, etc. An example of this is Seret (For my Reyzen database, I am using
YIVO orthography to spell the names and towns, so many of the name or town
spellings won't match up with their name today or then, e.g. Seret, which
perhaps today is Siret, Romania). If anyone can read Yiddish (the
biographies are in Yiddish) or wishes to translate any of them for the
group, let me know and I will send you the pdf page number. You can find any
of the four volumes at www.archive.org .
Here goes (Given Name, Surname, Town/City/other):
Yakov Groper, (Miheyleny, on Moldavia-Bukovina Border)
Salomon Viniger (Gurahumora, S. Bukovina)
Leybl Toyb(i)sh (Czernowitz?)
Khayim Leker (Lenkovits, near Czernowitz)
Sh. (Pavel) Meltser (Radauts, Bukovina)
Yakov Pistiner (Fundul-Moldovy, Bukovina)
L. Kats (Seret, Bukovina)
Yosef Kisman (Paltinosa, Bukovina)
Leo Kesner (Berhomer, oyfn Seret)
Binyamin Resler (Seret)
Yitskhok Shreyer (Vizhnits)

Steven Lasky
