Jill and Shellie,

Your mails are highly appreciated. Please let me add a few notes from the archives of the Czernowitz newspaper "Der Tag"

http://dertag.forenworld.com/index.php

on two family names (Rubinger, Flinker), you were quoting in your mails.

Shellie: You are mentioning your Rubinger's buried in the Czernowitz Jewish Cemetery. There are four articles between September 1933 and November 1933 mentioning Rubinger as an active social democrat and as an advisor at the workers education club "Morgenrot". In addition, we have the model Blume Rubinger on 11.09.1932.

Jill: You are mentioning your grandmother Bertha Flinker. We have got several very interesting Flinker's in Czernowitz, as for example
- Dr. Ernst Maria Flinker, as of 17.07.1932 deputy executive editor of "Der Tag",
- his brother Robert Flinker (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Flinker), who committed suicide in 1945 in Bucharest,
- Hedwig Flinker, licentiate at Dijon University and French teacher in Czernowitz,
- Fanny Flinker, widow of a medical inspector,
- Dr. Flinker, the Czernowitz District Physician.

Do these additional data ring a bell? I hope so and wish you a happy genealogical "hunting" and a nice week!

My grandmother Bertha Flinker's family was from Cz and my father (only child) was born here in 1910, but left at 10 days old to live in Vienna where Bertha and her spouse Abraham Bieder now lived. My father remained in Vienna until WW2 but never returned to Cz and regretted this and talked endlessly about the special place it was. Bruce Reisch kindly sent me images of the Flinker family burial plots in the Cz cemetery and I am very keen to visit -hopefully this summer. I have also since discovered several Cz siblings of Bertha's disappeared during WW2 and I would like to discover their fate and pay homage to them. I do feel very connected to Cz and this newsgroup even from so far away and often wonder if I am the only Kiwi (New Zealander) in this group. Amazingly Bertha and her husband Abraham managed to get to NZ in 1947, I remember her playing the piano and singing wonderful Bukowinian songs to us as children in the back blocks of NZ and buying us forbidden candy. She spoke poor English, German and Ruthenian. Imagine how weird this place must have been for her but she survived here till she was 86.
