Subject: [Cz-L] Popovici
Due to illness I wasn't there from the beginning but, as that period
was such a decisive one in all our lives, I would like to add some of
the things I know. They are unimportant but do add some light to the
Popovici period.
How can one describe Mrs. Popovici. A very beautiful, sexy, vivacious,
lovely, likable person. She loved flirting and our (Jewish) boys were
very attractive. I can't tell you - nor can I imagine - when this
could have been -what between Yellow Star/ Ghetto/Munca de fulos
obstesc - all my friends had been taken to-, but it was summer, that I
am certain of as I wore light dresses. As soon as I went walking in
the Herrengasse - I with my famous Pekingese whose story this is -
Mrs. Popovici was there. We all liked her very much. The first thing
she did was pick my dog up, cuddle her and asking me to give it to her
which every time anew I refused.
The Ghetto came. I was with my Betar when Mrs. Popovici came to my
mother and asked for the dog promising us Popovici permits for the
whole family, which comprised my parents, aunt and uncle. I had no
idea THEN that mother separated me from my dog for any reason as this
was to be kept secret, I guess. NOT until we started writing did I
think of it. I never forgave my mother - now that she is dead I can't
even tell her that -.
I know that NO money has been paid and that we did get our permits and
she did save our lives. Now, whether you or anyone else thinks it was
bribery? I don't think so. I had something she wanted and, as I called
it before, it was good old fashioned barter and it saved 5 lives!!! I
think it a fair exchange.
