Hallo Charles,
So we are Spharads !
That is if we trace to the early settlers of 1408.
In our family the Spanish origin did not show .
And Constantinople was the biggest city of the world .
The Ottomans took it only 50 years later.
Their trade was in Jewish hands and one of the supply
lines was Lemberg- Yassy .
First by carriages - then by rail .
These are the facts - the rest are stories.
Were these first- comers Spharads ?
The expulsion of the Spanish Jews was in 1494
that is 90 years of the founding of Czernowitz.
So if they settled there it was at a later stage.
It still puzzles me why should jews from Granada or Toledo
settle pinkt on the Prut ?
Geih weiss ! (Yiddish expression showing low credibility )
Hardy
