I would like to write about two occurrences in 1944.
My father was working at the Spirtus factory in Hliboka, some distance
south of Czernowitz. He would only come home for a day or two,
once every 10 - 14 days, using the local train to go back and forth.
Once when he needed to go back, he went to the train station, but after
two hours was back at home. The train though scheduled, had not left,
because the engineer was drunk. The next day, he again went to the train
station and again came back home, because the engineer was drunk again.
On the third day, he left again and again after a few hours he was back
home. My mother asked: Was the engineer dunk again? " No", my father said,
"when I got to the station, it had already left". The station master
explained to my father that since the train had failed to leave on two days,
on the third day it left early.
One day my mother received an order to present herself at a nearby office,
from where she would be sent with other women to fell trees in a nearby
forest. Not having anyone she could leave me with and I being seven years
old at the time she took me with her. The office was a large room and when
we arrived there were already a number of women sitting and waiting for
the official to arrive. All the women were Ruthenian peasant women and
compared to them, my mother looked small and weak.
Some of the women, immediately said to my mother: "you cannot take a child
with you" to which my mother replied that she had no alternative.
After a while, the official arrived. As soon as he came in, two of the women
rushed over to his desk and loudly insisted that my mother could not
possibly be taken to fell trees; first of all she had a small child and
second; she was a "Panyeh" (lady).
So insistent were they, that the official sent my mother home.
