I too am familiar with the term. As far as I remember it is not always
connected with "vengeance" - just the act of doing something unpleasant to
somebody, or hurting him/her to spite. The origin is very likely from the
Russian word sbit or sbivat (maybe the s turns into z in the Ukrainian
regions, or was just misspelled in Czernowitz Yiddish) meaning: to bring
down, shake down, knock down.
