That's the way I remember my mother using the word shmendrick . . . as
similar to nudnick . . .

A shmendrick is closely related to a nudnick....both are foolish
people.And a "tchatshke" is a thing,non-specific,can be anything.And if
using theword to refer to a member of the fairer sex it tends to mean
she is a nicelady!! Cornel -----Original Message-----From:

YiddishMay be there were no "Paskudniak"s among the English and that is
why there was no word for it.I thought of some more Ukrainian words
which found their way into Yiddish:Dno - the bottom of a barrel.
If you wasted your money, you put it into a barrel without
a"dno".Chotsh - at least.Shmendrik - endearment for a small
child.Tsatzke - toy? Like: Oy ist doos a Tsatzke! about a not
particularly respectable woman. To Hedwig: A "Macke" is from the Hebrew
"Makah".Mimi[snip]-------------------------------------------------------
