Dear Chernnowitzers,
my name is Dorina Zilbermints, I am the director of Jewish heritage
programs in Association of the Jewish Organizations and Communities of
Ukraine - Vaad of Ukrane. I am the curator of Chernivtsi Museum of the
History and Culture of Bucovinean Jewry. I have a very important
information for you. It will take a few minutes to read but the result can
be very perceptible.
Treasures of Jewish cultural heritage in Ukraine often remain unknown
to the world. At the same time, the priceless reminders of the past
disappear from the face of the earth, while the communities are struggling
to survive.
There are two precious peaces of Jewish heritage of Bucovina Jewry that
need to be saved from destruction and require your attention.
Please find below the letter of Josef Zissels, Vaad of Ukraine Chairman,
EAJC General Council Chairman, Chernowitzer, the founder of Chernivtsi
Museum of the History and Culture of Bucovinean Jewry.
>From Josef Zissels:
*The preservation of Jewish cultural heritage and the issues of restitution
of the Jewish community property are the two top-priority spheres of
interest of our organization. Material heritage as well as cultural one is
integral to people=92s culture. Without heritage, memory, and history a
people are just a purposeless mob. Within the XX century, as a result of
wars, revolutions, mass repressions and genocide the major part of personal
and community property was destroyed, plundered, illegally dispossessed and
thus lost for the community. During the last years a small part of the
Jewish property was returned to the community.
*
**
*The newly found building of the Novoselitsa synagogue (Chernivtsi region,
Ukraine) in is a unique piece of Jewish synagogue art of European if not
world-wide importance. The synagogue painting is one of the rarest works
of XX century art. It=92s the most artistically diverse of the synagogues =
in
the Eastern Europe, found in our time. The building of the synagogue is in
a dangerous state, deteriorating day by day, and requires urgent
renovation. With the money raised we will be able to renovate it, restore
fresco paintings and authenticity of the building. This will enable us to
get the synagogue included in the tour itinerary as a unique property of
the Jews of Ukraine of the early XX century.*
**
*Students from several Israeli Universities participated in an
archaeological expedition to Chernivtsi in 2008. The murals that appeared
under the layers of lime in Chevra Tehilim Synagogue wash were unparalleled
in their beauty. If not renovated the most valuable fresco paintings of the
synagogue Chevra Tehilim (currently an Evangelic church) in Chernovtsy will
be lost. Experts believe that the murals were produced by the same artist
that painted the synagogue in Novoselitsa. These murals represent one of
the few, and purest, examples of 19th century Jewish folk art left after
World War II. This is why it is essential to save the precious murals of Ch=
evra
Tehilim Synagogue.*

*The two projects are very important for culture and history of Ukraine and
Europe and their contribution will be very perceptible. With your help we
will be able to preserve the Jewish cultural heritage and the link between
generations will not be lost.*
*Josef Zissels, Vaad of Ukraine Chairman, EAJC General Council Chairman** =

*Dear Chernowitzers, *
*please distribute this information to whom it may consern. I have both of
the projects (with budgets, documentation and letters of support) ready to
be submitted to the potential donors by request. *
*I hope for your help and cooperation.*
*Thank you very much in advance,*
