Nope, read the verses:

Sergentul nostru pui de leu,
Ne zise astea cuvinte,
Cat no-ti fi morti voi toti si eu,
Copii tot inainte.

Indeed the sargent died later, but the first person reciter must have survived,
both literaly and poetically - he was only a simple soldier.

Besides, when reciting at that time the poem at the age of nearly 11 I
was very proud to have survived the others even without an arm and
wounded, please don't take me that conviction now!
