Just an interesting note re Joseph Schmidt, the beloved tenor of my parents
- in particular for his beautiful rendering of Recha:
I happened to spend several Sabbaticals at the UN IAEA centre in Vienna. In
one of them (1995) I was advised by the main Synagogue cantor, Shmuel
Barzilai, a good friend of ours, that the Municipality had decided to
dedicate a tiny square to Joseph Schmidt. It happened to be sited several
minutes from our flat at the time, so I could not miss the ceremony of
dedication, at which Shmuel, of course, recited the EL Male Rachamim.
For those who happen to be in Vienna, and wish to see the
Joseph-Schmidt-Platz - its site (quite tiny - really tiny - square) is at a
small road branching off the Rennweg, a few minutes walk East of the
Ungargasse / Fasanengasse crossing (the Rennweg underground station,
reachable by nos. 1, 2, 3, and 7) - entry via Aspangstrasse (at its crossing
with the Stanislausgasse/Rennweg), close to the ARTIS hotel.

Josef Schmidt sings "Wenn du jung bist" in the thirties :
or in English:
When you young are , belongs you - the world,
When you all that beautiful is - like,
Hardy
