My father (Oscar Ezra Wolf) was recruited at the end of 1917 (after he
returned from the "flucht'). I don't know to what unit, but I know that his
cousin (Alexander Srul Hebel) who was already serving for 2 years arranged
for my father to join him on the Italian front where he served till the army
there actually disintegrated at the end of the war and both cousins had to
hitchhike all the way back to Czernowitz which was in the process of
becoming Romania. As for "elderly" men serving I know that my maternal
grandfather (Isidor Srul Ruhm) who lived in Suczawa and was born on 1870
joined a volunteer unit that was attached to the regular forces in the area.

Hannelore....I have a theory! Marc Goldberger gives some dates for Russian
occupations of Czernowitz. It may well be that when the Austrians reoccupied
the town on 18.2.1915 the 41st was fighting somewhere else and among the
returning Austrian Army were units of the 15th and they recruited locals to
fill the ranks. No evidence but it seems plausible. Cornel

Following your posts on regiment 15 topic I am looking for the answer
to the following question: why was a Czernowizer recruited in Tarnopol
or Lemberg (regiment 15) when he could have been recruited into
Czernowitzer regiment 41?
If it was so in one case, other young Czernowitzer could have been in
the same case and chances are that there is another one in this
picture!
Hardy is right about the fact that primarily every soldier got a copy
of this photo,so there are many possibilities of finding one on the
web, this should not be debated. It only happens I have one of those
originals and I have shared it four years ago.
