The trade was not important in the KUK Army . The Army knew always better
what's the best occupation for you. See Swejk.

My father wrote some memoires about WWI. He was still a youngster.

But 5 of his brothers served in the Austrian Army.

I think that not all my uncles were drafted in Czernowitz, as some of them
fled to the "west" already after the first Russian occupation.

Even his father - my observant grandfather - was "drafted" . My father
wrote:
{ Um das Bild vollstaendig zu machen, erwaehne ich, dass auch der Vater im
Jahre 1918 "assentiert" wurde und bis zum Ende des Krieges als
Offiziersdiener eben...diente.}
To complete the image ( of the family) I must say that even my father was
"drafted" in 1918 and served in the army as a...servant for an officier.

He was 48 years old.

One of my fathre's brothers, David Ehrenkranz, was drafted probably in
1916:
{ Bald wurde auch David eingezogen. Er ging ins Feld, wurde verwundet,
geriet Oktober 1916 in russische Gefangenschaft, aus der er erst 1920
zurueckkehrte.}
David was soon wounded and became in October 1916 a prisoner in Russia. He
came back only in (October-November) 1920 .

So, he spent 4 years as a prisoner in Russia !
I think that in the first years he too was in Siberia.
But I understood from my late cousin Vera that the last period he spent in
Tomsk and even studied there. Is it possible?

Do you know stories from the life of these Bukowiner POWs in Russia? I am
eager to find out how they lived all those years. Please tell us more!

With thanks,
Irene

Cornel:

My grandfather who was a rope-maker by trade was almost 50 when he was
draft= ed into the army in Cz. What duties might the Austrian army have
assigned to= someone this age?
