Hi! The Bukowinaschen Dragoner Regiment Freiherr Piret de Bahain (1682-1892)
was based in Czernowitz from 1888. The Erzherzog Albrecht bit was a later
change. The K&K Landwehr Infanterie No22 were also based in Czernowitz,
Landwehr units were a sort of homeguard, not quite up to the standard of the
K&K Infanterie regiments. As the war went on they were used pretty much the
same. Also inCzernowitz were the Husaren Regiment No14 and the Ulahnen
Regiment Graf Auersperg No 8. Cornel

Good morning everybody,

I think some men might have been recruited into a different Regiment than
the "local" Czernowitz one, for various reasons. Judging by the men in my
family, I would assume profession to have been a possible reason. Another
good reason might have been that some fled to other places on the eve of WWI
- e.g. Vienna - and were drafted there.

The reasons for my assumptions are:

1. My great-grandfather Dr. Abraham TAMLER, born 1876, lawyer, from Zastawna
- served in the Landsturmbezirkskommando No. 22 in 1914, then No. 39, and
ended up at the Divisionsgericht (for which I do not have a number). He got
as far as Belluno.

2. Abraham's younger brother, Isaac (Isidor) TAMLER, born 1881, notary,
living in Putila, served in the Dragonerregiment Erzherzog Albrecht No. 9.

3. My great-great-uncle Rudolf NEUMANN, born 1895, student - when the war
started he "jumped" over the border into Romania, was sent back, "jumped"
into Hungary and enlisted with a cavalry regiment there - but as he could
not bring his own horse (for obvious reasons) he went to Vienna to join his
family which had fled to there from Zastawna. Rudi was drafted in March 1915
into the Landwehrinfanterieregiment No. 36. He was on the Russian front and
on the Italian front.

It is unfortunate the the Military Archives in Vienna (the Kriegsarchiv)
only have files on soldiers / officers who were decorated - the regular
files of all regions which Austria lost after the war were given to the
countries to which these regions belonged. And I have no idea what Romania
did with these holdings. But if there is even the slightest chance of a
relative of yours to have received a medal - even as a group, not as an
individual (I have a case like this in the family), it is worth sending a
search request to the Kriegsarchiv. Depending on the amount of information
you can provide they will provide a cost estimate (the maximum I had to pay
for an extensive search was ca. 120 Euros). I received copies of all the
"Belohnungsantraege" they could find and these contained some very detailed
information - so in my case, the effort was well worth it.

My two cents :-)

Kind regards,

Dana Dimitriu
