In German, we used to call such people " HOCHSTAPLERS" or PROTZERS. In Yiddish
"SCHWITZERS."

I disagree, Hardy - I'm looking for that word in German that mother would have
used about something in bad taste. "unanständig?" Not that, but something like

that. Czernowitzers were quite conservative and would give you looks of quiet
disapproval if you were out of step or acted in bizarre ways. Flaunting wealth
was in bad taste, even talking about money was considered gauche. A
stretched-out car that looks like it needs an extra set of wheels in the middle
to keep from letting its belly drag on the ground would have been considered
freakish, improper, foolish, nicht ...etwas....
