I doubt that there are many elders in Chernivtsi who remember Czernowitz
as it was before WW2. The Romanians, Germans, Poles, Armenians and Jews,
mostly left or died, the Ruthenians were "veschlept" to Siberia, or left to
Canada or also died. The present inhabitants came from Russia, the
surrounding villages and from the republic of Moldavia.
In the Wiener café, I meet mostly tourists, the majority Ukrainian tourists,
who come to see the "Western" city of Chernivtsi, the "Kultur" of Habsburg
Austria, where the sculpture of Kaiser Franz Josef still stands as a
reminder.
