       Great pictures of those backyards. The doors on the gangways provided
access to the apartment
        unless the owners were wealthy and had a doorway from the main
stairway into the better part of the place.
       The courtyard was also a fun place for the kids. We lived at
Hormusackigasse 3 (Hurmuzachistr) in my early
       childhood. There was a water pump in the courtyard, perfect for
splashing around. Other amusements:
      the pots and pans repair man and the accompanying noise; the metal bar
on top of two poles where you beat
     the dust out of your carpets with a "trapaczka" and last but not least
the "hurdy gurdy" man and his music.
      There was no need for TV.
       Another song besides the National hymn was "Trei culori cunosc pe
lume" referring to the colors of the
       Romanian flag.
