In late June early July of this year, I spent a few days in Czernowitz.
My visit coincided with the beginning of the work-camp organized
by ASF Germany, to clear the cemetery of the rampant vegetation which
threatens to destroy the tombs and gravestones.

The volunteers worked with great dedication and patience, during
very hot weather and managed to clear completely areas #1 and #2
of the cemetery, near the fence along Zelena street, to the left of the
entrance to the cemetery.
At the same time workers hired by CJCRO through Dr. Bursuk, worked
on clearing newly sprouted vegetation from area #28 which is along
the left side of the main path.

I have placed all the photographs I took at the cemetery on a Picasa web
album, so you can see what has been done and what still needs doing.
You can access this album at:

Those of you who are members of CJCRO (Czernowitz Jewish cemetery
Restoration Organization), have already received this information.

At this point, I would like to ask all who have not joined CJCRO so far,
to please join and contribute to our efforts to restore and maintain this
last resting place of our ancestors and relatives.
CJCRO has managed to considerably improve the situation at the cemetery,
by hiring workers to cut and remove the invasive vegetation which made the
cemetery into an impenetrable jungle. But much remains to be done.
Please do your share.

Detailed information about CJCRO can be found on the EHPES website
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/
under the heading "The Czernowitz Jewish Cemetery".
