Apropos schools. A question to those of us who were fortunate enough =
to remain in Czernowitz during 1941-4 with a Popovici permit, and who =
were at schooling age.=20
Did any of you attend the Jewish school that was opened by the Fascist =
Romanian authorities, I believe in begin of 1944, in apprehension of the =
approaching Soviet Army, and at which we attended lessons in Romanian =
(and Yiddish?)? I believe it was somewhere in an alley branching off the =
Springbrunnengasse. What do you recall? Do any of you have any info =
about the background to the opening of this school?
I recall my happiness and relief to meet scores Jewish children, of =
all ages (I was just 11 at the time), and to attend schooling again =
after over two years of staying at home (first in the Gheto, then back =
in our flats, than again in a flat in the Gheto area when we were =
evicted from our home in favour of a Romanian officer), and attending =
only Hebrew and Tora lessons at the home of a gifted Melamed who =
endangered his and his family's life by tutoring us. I recall the =
fearful walking through ghessalekh and courtyards to his house and back, =
careful not to be acosted by shkootzim who could beat us, or worse - =
drag us to a policeman, who would question us to get to our tutor.
