Mimi, there are lots of names showing origins, most certainly not just among
Sphardim. I suggest you look up the origin of Ashkenaz in Wikipedia....it
will save me a lot of Email! Cornel

The word Eskenazi or Ashkenazi and variants means
"coming from Ashkenaz". Ashkenaz was the old word for Germany.
Only among Sephardic populations, would a person be called
by a name which means that he came from Germany, and later,
other European countries.

That is why the name is indicative of Jews who moved from Germany
and surrounding European countries to a place where most
of the Jewish population was either Sephardi or Middle Eastern.
People in Czernowitz and vicinity who were named Aschkenasi or Eskenazi
either were the descendants of the Jewish population who resided in
Czernowitz
during the Turkish rule, or they came to Czernowitz from Romania,
where there was a large Sephardi community.
