Berti,
As a member of our DerTag-Readers-Club I wish to add to your interesting
comment.
First : Hugo Gold did NOT write and/or live in Czernowitz.
The H.G. - signing , witty and multi- talented young journalist we read is
Heinrich Goldmann.
He is responsible for many " feuilltons" and , to my delight, he has a sharp
and critical mind. But, he could NOT write political comments in his
personal style - the official and auto-imposed censorship of the day will
not allow and even sanction it .
Municipal affairs were the only issues he could afford to be a little bit
critical about.
Besides he expressed also his personal longings to live in a real, big,
modern and exciting European Grossstadt (Capital)!
His stories and poems are often very funny and do not excuse the provincial
behavior of THE Czernowitzer of 1934 ! ( he did not mean you, of course,
take it easy).
Feuilleton style (from Wikipedia):
The Feuilleton is a writing genre that allows for much journalistic freedom
as far as its content, composition and style are concerned; the text is
hybrid which means that it makes use of different genre structures, both
journalistic and literary. The characteristic of a column is also the lack
of the group of fixed features in strong structural relation.
Thematic domain of a Feuilleton column tends to be always up-to-date,
focusing specifically on cultural, social and moral issues. An accented and
active role by the columnist as the subject of the narration is also very
important characteristic of this genre. The tone of its writing is usually
reflexive, humorous, ironic and above all very subjective in drawing
conclusions, assessments and comments on a particular subject.
Unlike other common journalistic genres, the feuilleton such is very close
to literary. Its characteristic feature is lightness and wit evidenced by
wordplay, parody, paradox and humorous hyperboles. The vocabulary is usually
not neutral, and strongly emotionally loaded words and phrases prevail.
Regards,
Irene

Subject: Re: [Cz-L] Our love for Czernowitz
Reading daily "Der Tag" from 1933/4 one is amazed about the non stop
critique Hugo Gold and Alia have about the physical condition the streets of
Cz. are in, the neglect of the municipality of the water pipes, the non
respecting of privacy by shouting, loud music, unacceptable street noise,
bad electric supply, bad behavior of most citizens, neglect by central
government (Bucuresti) of this specific province and town, discrimination
against foreign language speakers (mostly German) in offices, schools and
even on the streets. The image of Cz. is one far worse than that of other
towns like Timisoara etc.
and the comparisons made on a nearly weekly basis by the newspaper.
Putting aside our idealizations on one side and the natural function of a
critical newspaper that as we know until to-day will exaggerate whenever
possible any bad reality on the other, I think that part of the difference
is explainable by the changes that occurred during the 1930th. Czernowitz
suffered in WWI three occupations, was then neglected by the new Romanian
administration, had may be an uplift from 1925 to 1929 and then the general
economic crisis from1929 t0 1933. Only in 1934 things got better and we
naturally remember the town as it was in this second part of the 30th. For
us the streets were already paved etc.....
The next phase was of course a turn to the worse...
