me because both Solomon Lerner and Bernard Reder were teachers of mine when

Thank you for posting and here is - thanks to Dragos Olaru from Czernowitz,
who brought the photo and the historical context to us - the story behind
this impressive drawing:

Bukovina became independent from Galicia establishing a separate Austrian
crown land and declared the Duchy of Bukovina on March 4, 1849. But on April

22, 1860 Bukovina again was amalgamated with Galicia under the government of

Count Agenor Goluchowski of Goluchowo as Governor of Galicia. A coalition of

middle-class intellectuals, irrespective of their ethnicity, opposed
vehemently against this re-usurpation. The protest campaign was headed by
Eudoxiu Hurmuzachi and his brothers, as well as by Karl Umlauff. They were
successfull and Bukovina's status as crown land was restored in 1861. The
drawing is illustrating one of the protest demonstrations dated June 20,
1860.
