This week, I received a letter from David Guttmann, a nephew of the
famed Czernowitz actress Sidi Thal. David -- who grew up in Czernowitz
and now lives in Berlin --heads the Sidi Thal Memorial Fund,
"dedicated to preservation of traditions of the Jewish theater" and to
keeping alive the "memory of the honored actress of Ukraine Sidi
Thal."
David writes that the Fund's past activities have included sponsorship
of acting competitions for young performers and of concerts in Sidi
Thal's memory; publication of two books about Sidi Thal and her
husband, producer and manager Pinchas Falik; and participation in the
airing of documentary films about Sidi on Ukrainian television.
Now, planning is underway for a concert to commemorate the 100th
anniversary of Sidi Thal's birth. The concert will be held on
Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Chernivtsi Regional Philharmonic Hall,
where Sidi Thal and Pinchas Falik worked for much of their lives.
Admission is free. For tickets, or for more information about the
concert or the Sidi Thal Memorial Fund, contact David at
d.guttmann290949_at_gmail.com . Please write in German, Russian, or
Ukrainian if possible.
If you would like a copy of the letter I received, let me know; I will
be glad to forward it.
Part of a 1992 concert commemorating Sidi (and introduced by Josef
Burg) is on YouTube -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVhDFjiJpm8 .
(Thank you, Edgar Hauster, for putting it there!)
