Dear all,

last Monday I returned from my recent trip to Czernowitz. As every August I accompanied the volunteers of SVIT Ukraine to give them an idea about the Jewish cemetery and the history of Jewish Czernowitz. As always they turned out to be a nice bunch of young people - curious and thoughtful. The progress of years of work by CJCRO and both volunteer organizations is now visible. Even if it still does not look like it should be, the cemetery is in much better state then it was before the works started. Nevertheless we have to see things in long term perspectives.

According to different ressources old Czernowitz had 40 to 60 synagogues and prayer houses. The local Chabad community published a list of Jewish objects in the city that contents about 30 of them. Whenever I had time I strolled through backyards and side lanes to find some of them. They are published together with other pictures of the trip: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2393444851747.67259.1719710062&type=1&l=456d078124

I'm not sure if the list that I took with me is right in every detail. Some mistakes I already realized. In case of the pictures of the former synagogues I depend of your help. Could some of you have a look and confirm?

All the best
Christian
