The Schmatnik family were neighbors of my paternal grandparents.
I do not know how close their houses were, but they lived
on the same street in Manasteriska. This treet was named in German
"Verlaengerte Pumnulgasse" and in Romanian:"Strada Aron Pumnul".
In the address books of Czernowitz the houses in Manasteriska, mostly
do not have a street address. My grandparents' house has only the
number 516,
the Rosenberg family, to whom I am related by marriage lived in
number 520.
The Schmatnik family is listed as living at number 0.
I believe that the name of Charles's grandfather was Aron Schmatnik.
He did own horses and my father was occasionally allowed to ride them.
He also drew a very fine drawing of some of them, which hangs in my
living room.
My father told the following story:
The Schmatniks had a lot of children, either 12 or 18.
in the evenings, just before supper, Mr. Schmatnik would come out
on to the street where the children were playing, go up to one of his
children
and say: "Are you mine? If yes, come home supper is ready."

Behind the houses on the Pumnulgasse there was a small brook,
named: "Klokuczka Bach".
On the EHPES website, in the map collection there is a Czernowitz map
from 1907. On this map the suburb of Manasteriska, "Vorstadt
Manasteriska"
is in the lower left part of the map. The "Verlaengerte Pumnulgasse"
(elongated Pumnul street) is not named on the map, but by locating
the Pumnulgasse in Czernowitz proper, one can deduct which street
is the "Verlaengerte Pumnulgasse". The Klokuczka Bach runs to the
north of it.

As to Zoya, I will write to her. I myself and all the people to whom
I recommended her,
have always found her helpful and 100% honest.
