Subject: Re: [Cz-L] Our love for Czernowitz
Everyone of us carries different memories. I personally who left Cz. in 1943
was born there, my memories are neither of streets and houses but of the
people, the friendships, the discussions, the books, lending libraries and
even schools. I am not surprised that Iris' father had no problems passing
exams in the USA. We did get a wonderful education in the 30s when I went to
elementary and high school. Although I often hated the long poems in German,
Rumanian and Russian I had to learn by heart, the Latin translations! It was
often hard going and I remember sometimes putting my poetry, after having
learned it, under my pillow to be sure I shan't forget it, but my memory was
strengthened by it. I still remembered my biology so well that, when my son
went to his "A"levels in London I could still remember my digestive and
blood system and we could talk about it. Not thanks to me, I am certain, but
his teacher he passed it with an A mark. Latin, French, Rumanian and German
were of great help to me throughout my long life.
To me, Cz. was and will remain the city were friends were real and still,
the few surviving, still are. My uncle always said that Capri hat die blaue
Grotte, Czernowitz die graue Blotte. I do remember we always wore Galoschen
or rubber boots, so I suppose not all streets were paved and with the snow
melting there was a lot of slush but, those are not my memories, that I
have erased, I guess, but the people young and old well dressed hats,
gloves. muffs in winter, handbags in summer, Knikse, politeness, fun. That I
miss. The intimacy of a small city where most people knew most, plotkes,
laughter, however hard times were and although I had no youth, I had
friends, and dafke, we laughed in all that misery.
Shavua Tov to one and all,
anny
