Here is an excerpt from chapter 4 "HELL" of my book Ruth's Journey:

That was in Bershad, Transnistria

 
" My guardians were now giving me less food each day, which did not bother me
much since I had lost my appetite anyway. I felt as if I were fading away and
thought that now my time had come for sure. Once more I retreated into my
"guarded area," the memories of my beloved Milie:
     It's July, time to harvest fruit, especially the prunes from a dozen trees.
Everyone's involved. We children pit the prunes while the adults prepare the
bonfires. They put the huge copper kettles over the fire and mix the fruit with
sugar and spices. The jam cooks and cooks, while Mama and Tante Anna stir the
boiling mixture with a long, oar-like spatula. The whole village smells of the
rich aroma of the prune butter. I spread a big gob of it on a piece of bread
made from wheat grown in Dziadziu's field, ground up in his mill, and baked in
the hot oven. Milie!"
