Dear friends, dear Edgar,
Thank you all for the warmly expressed congratulations! Indeed we are
proud of our Nadine, she has worked hard for her career, and we hope
that one day she will perform in Israel as well. Maybe "next year in
...Tel Aviv or Massada"!
Yesterday we me Mr. and Mrs. Goosmann, they came to our house and we
talked for many hours. A nice couple, very excited about their
experiences, about all the persons they met in Czernowitz, about the
Jewish world they got to know a bit. Mrs. Goosman has only been once in
Czernowitz, but was just as enthusiastic and positive.Mr. Goosmann, who
has been three times as a volunteer, informed us of his method of
killing sapplings with the diluted herbicide, and that he is still
looking for something better. He told us admiringly about Mimi and her work,
he seems to have a weak spot for her, hear Mimi. He mentioned Dr.
Bursuk's efforts, spoke about Rabbi Glitzenstein who at first did not
want to shake hands with a German person butbecame friendly with him
when he got to know him better. Mr. Goosmann seemed quite proud of that.
He explained that in the beginning it was not easy for him either, as a
German to open up, with all the historical baggage that he carried with
him.
He told what an interesting and joyful atmosphere there was at the
opening of the Kornsche Schul.
He talked about Edgar, Herrmann Christian, of Mykola Kushnir.
Being on the cemetery, seeing people find their ancestors, reading some
inscriptions made him feel even more the tragedy of the past. He was
made so welcome by the group, and the people he worked with so friendly,
that now he feels "a part of it" and is certain he will come again. He
said there will be a meeting in Berlin soon, of some of the participants
in the camp. He also wanted some more information about Edy Wagner of
course, whose tomb he has cleaned with much care. We were able to
complete the picture. And also tried to explain about the Jewish life
before the war in Czernowitz, its complexity, its culture, its various
social strata, the languages spoken.. At the end, my husband recited a
fable ba Eliezer Steinbarg, then we made them hear a little of Joseph
Schmidt (Hardy you'll like this ).
They are not so well-versed in classical music, but they were most
impressed, Mr. Goosmann said he had never heard such a voice!
Lots of food for thought on both parts.
Gabriele
