Hi Mimi,
When I book a flight, I try to find the cheapest and the most convenient way to travel. Yes there is a connection from from Tel Aviv thru Rome, Timisoara and to Czernowitz, but the price for a round trip is 1,636 Euros, which in today's rate is $2097 Dollars. I paid $850 for Tel Aviv-Bucharest-Suceava-Bucharest-Frankfurt-Tel Aviv. The 2 hotels $80 plus transportation Suceava-Czernowitz $154 which makes a total of $1,084. It was not the most convenient way but it was half the price and I also got to fly to Frankfurt for this price.
Regarding the volunteers, I did say "what a great bunch, nice young kids from 7 countries", OK, sorry I missed intelligent.
Regarding restoration of headstones and Vasili, this is the guy who charged me $750 for a plate of half an inch which he glued on to the existing headstone. Yes I knew that he was taking advantage of me, but after 4 trips to Czernowitz I wanted to finish with this. This plate should not have cost more than $100 dollars. So please forget Vasili as he is a middle man, and get somebody decent who will not overcharge.

Dear Arthur,
Thank you for your report on your visit to Czernowitz.
I would like to comment on a the various issues you wrote about.
Traveling to Czernowitz: In recent years I have found that
the most convenient way, is to fly to Czernowitz by Carpatair.
They have direct flights to Czernowitz and back from Timisoara.
It is possible to get to Timisoara from Munich, Rome, Berlin
and other major airports.
The SVIT Ukraine volunteers always come from many different countries,
are intelligent, hardworking, interested and interesting young people.
As to stone masons in Czernowitz: I have had a mason recommended
by Dr. Bursuk repair some headstones for me, as well as for otherĀ
members
of this list. He did a very good job and was not expensive.
His name is Vasilyi, but I have neither his surname or his EmailĀ
address.
I will try to get it from Dr. Bursuk.
Mimi
