Dear All,
Regarding the link sent by Willy Goldman I would have some comments to
make: the first piece played by the trumpet with piano accompaniment is
in fact a "Lied" composed by Tschaikovsky for mezzo-soprano with piano
accompaniment. The Lied is composed on a poem by Goethe and is entitled
"Sehnsucht" -Longing - It starts...nur wer die Sehsucht kennt, weiss was
ich leide - only he who has known longing, knows how I suffer.
In 2001 we were invited to celebrate Rose Ausländer's 100 th birthday
anniversary in Czernowitz. It took place in the National Theatre and
included performances and readings of Ausländer's poems by two actresses
and a few music performances sung and played by Nadine Weissmann, myself
and the pianist Josef Oelgiesser from Czernowitz. Nadine sung this Lied
by Tschaikovsky, and at the end of a pretty long evening she sang
Ravel's Kaddish. It was a profoundly moving experience.
P.S. I share Ruth Gold's opinion about the missing link to Joseph Schmidt.
Edgar Hauster's video links about the three days of the Meridian
Festival were interesting (thank you, Edgar) but left us with somehow
mixed feelings. We failed in our search to find a common denominator
between the former German and Yiddish speaking cultural world of
Czernowitz,: (writers, poets, painters and fabulists and the younger
generation of post-war artists present at the Festival with their works.
Eduard and Gabriele
PPS. AND OF COURSE: SHANA TOVA TO ALL, A HAPPY HOLIDAY WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS
AND A GOOD PEACEFUL YEAR
