When I was in Czernowitz in 1996 the stars had not yet been repaired
and I also was told that it was during the Soviet era (anti religious
+ anti semitic) that authorities ordered turn the Jewish stars into
abstract emblems. That's how I wrote about it in my journal. I was
being shown around by the then director of the Jewish Museum,
Bronislav Tuttelman and Slava Turnevitski and they told me that story.

best wishes
Sylvia
