themselves!! And another interesting bit...my family, the Neubergers, lived

Dear Merle and Cornel,

I do appreciate your kind thoughts and suggestions, based on your
experience. I wonder though re my case, because of three main handicaps:
- the fact that the 1940-45 years have left quite a scar in my appreciation
of the city that overshadows the beautiful preceding 7 years,
- the fact that Czernowitz - according to what I have seen from pictures of
Hardy and quite a few others is different from the old (this was supported
by "new" Czernowitzers who made aliah and described it to me, as well as by
a colleague of mine - also a "new" Czernowitzer - who was until recently a
Professor at Czernowitz University, and happens to live in a flat opposite
the house I was born and lived in - Althgasse 7; according to pictures he
sent me at least this neighbourhood has retained some of its old charm), and

- the fact that, while still there in that beautiful period, my parents and
I did not feel we belong, and felt we belong to our ancient homeland, and
this filtered through to our kids and grandchildren, whose roots are here
and not there.
However, taking into account your warm recommendation, I will keep my mind
open, and will see first the effect of my written memories on my kids and
theirs, before considering your sincere advice. The oldest of my
grandchildren, who is majoring in the history of the Jewish people in the
Middle ages and in Modern times, might be the decisive vector in their
decision to go - or not to go - together to visit the Czernowitz of today.

Thanks indeed for your comments

Mordecai
