To me and to many members of this list, the current looks and
state of repair of Czernowitz, ARE relevant.
Not only because I was born there, but because, this was the first
place I knew and because I was brought up according to the norms
prevalent there at the time.
I believe that Czernowitz was special, in some ways unique.
The city, the streets and buildings are the material expression of
the atmosphere which prevailed there till 1940.
You might say that I am in love with Czernowitz, that is why I want
it to be maintained and restored or renovated so as to preserve its
character.
Our parents and grandparents left or died. We left so as not to live
under Soviet rule.
Those who replaced us as inhabitants of the city had an education and
upbringing different from ours. If despite this, they try to maintain
the streets, buildings and gardens so as to preserve as much as possible
of the old Czernowitz, I am grateful and pleased. If tourists from other
parts of the Ukraine and from western Europe come to visit, I am happy.
