A very interesting repartee in today's CZ digest with particularly enlightening comments from Mimi and Hardy.  Your total devotion to CZ, Mimi, through all its periods and conditions, is heart warming and could come right out of a Broadway musical.

Your assessment, Hardy, is closer to mine which is equally ambivalent, running from hot to cold.  For those of us who have moved a good deal in our lives and called home numerous addresses in three countries, each takes its own place and the environment of our childhood is looked back on with a smile but no exceptional attachment.  It's like being a parent with many children - you love them all equally but each in a slightly different way.

However, your most notable comment, Hardy, was that when doing math you revert to German, which reminded me of my dad who started with Hungarian, picked up German, Russian, Romanian, even a bit of French and then English but always went back to Hungarian when counting.  In my Cz days, from birth to eleven and a half,  I spoke only German and Romanian with some school French.  I would imagine that the mathematical part of my brain used unu, doi, trei, patru since all subjects were taught in Romanian but I lost 95% of my Romanian and now I think in English and do math only in English.

I don't know if this tells us anything but what we use in mathematics may indicate the tenaciousness of our links and ties.  I am not certain about why I have not had any desire to visit Chernivtsi and actually passed on two opportunities to do so.  Perhaps because it is now Chernivtsi and not Czernowitz or Cernauti and I prefer to retain the image of the original in my memory.
