  Marrying on the 18 Oct 1941 in Cz is as extraordinary a feat as there is.
   In a time of no hope and no future, when mothers abandoned
   their babies , husbands their wives - to go and marry.
    A ray of hope,of sunshine in the darkness of our despair.
      Extraordinary people your parents.
        It is good that you bring it up.
          We are proud.

Dear all,

71 years ago today, my parents married in the Cernauti Primaria. They left
the ghetto under military escort with two witnesses and were married, they
then took the escort out to a Konditorei on the way back to the ghetto. They
were able to get autorizatie for themselves and their families remained in
the city for the rest of the war years. My parents' anniversary, like many
other family milestones, was a history lesson. I grew up with this story and
many others about their lives, and many of you know that these have shaped
me profoundly, so much so that i spent more than a decade researching this
history and writing about it with my husband Leo. When we went to Chernivtsi
in 2000, we found the record of their marriage in the registry office. I was
amazed that just as Cernauti was expelling its Jews, the registrar found the
time to cross-reference their marriage with my mother's birth record,
entered in 1918 in German. When we asked for a copy of the marriage
license, which my parents never received, it was issued to us in Ukrainian.

This is the first October 18 in my life that I no longer have a parent to
call to mark this occasion. So thank you all for being there to observe it
with me,
