Among my relatives who were deported to Transnistria from Sastavna
near Czernowitz, there was a family who had 3 young children.
This family like many others were marched to Transnistria on foot.
At some point the parents thought that they would not be able to carry
all three children. They wrapped the youngest child a baby, in some
of their warm clothes and left it by the side of the road. After
walking on
for about one km., the mother went back to pick up the baby.
In Transnistria all three children died. Luckily the parents survived.
Later they had two more sons. They also lived long enough to know
some of their grandchildren, of whom there are now eight or nine.
I have lost count of the great-grandchildren of these relatives,
but I have the photograph of the children who died and cherish it.
