Watches were a costly affair.
Pocket watches came first- before wrist watches were possible.
Anker was a well known firm.
Watches had stones - the more stones the more precious.
The stones -usually rubies- served as bearings for the movement.
The watch was worn on a chain and stashed into a vest pocket.
At noon sharp the Rathaus clock would strike.
Every watch owner would take out their time piece
adjust it and wind it up, not too strong , not to break the spring.
And put it back. A good job done.
In German it was called a Taschenuhr.
In Yiddish it was a Seiger, probably from the German Zeiger(pointer,
hand).
A watchmaker was therefore a Seigermacher.
You would find them in the Uhrmachergasse- old jewish quarter .
             And other places too.
