[Cz-L] Why serious in photos

The answer to your question, Ruth, is probably a Nineteenth Century attitude that has not completely expired in some cultures.  "Serious" in that perception relates to substance, reliability, trustworthiness.  Smiling, laughing is for fools.  If they are happy, they simply don't understand life. 
 
I recall the parting words from my father when at age twenty-seven I packed up my little family in Toronto to move to New York.  He said, "Be serious, Tibi."  (In Cz I was Tibi)
 
I never bought that.  I borrowed my philosophy from a Sicilian Wise Man who used to say to young people: "You can have anything you want in this world if you walk in with a big smile - and a gun."
