Re the smile in photography - I recommend to my photo students that they
take pictures of people smiling only if they're smiling on their own
because they feel amused - not because there is a camera pointing at them.
It was Kodak's marketing scheme at the turn of the 20th century that got
everyone to smile for the camera - it made people buy more cameras. So at
that family picnic that we remember the kids being tired & grumpy, some of
the adults dozing off and aunt so and so flirting with the gardener,
becomes flattened when a camera appears and everyone jumps up and smiles on
cue. In a sense becomes an erasure of personal history and memory..
