Hi Shellie,
Reading your comments on "Life expectancy", I learned that part of your family
was born in Milie. Do you know the names of your great-grandmother's sister's
children?
As my grandfather Littman Katz lived in Milie and we spent our summers on his
farm, I knew the names of all the Jewish families that lived there.Could we be
related?

Subject: Re: [Cz-L] Life expectancy in Czernowitz around 1890
My Wiznitza-born great-grandmother, b. 1864 had 10 children born throughout the
Bukovina - Putila, Wiznitz, Dorna Watra - between 1884 and 1900, of whom 6
survived to adulthood.
She was the second wife; the first having died not long after giving birth to
her first child [who survived.]
My great-grandmother's sister had 9 children born between 1877 and 1892 [most
born in Millie], 2 of whom died young.
Her brother's wife had three children, then she & the eldest were murdered by
robbers. His second wife, the sister of the first wife, had nine children born
in Dorna Candreni between 1897 and 1916 - all survived to adulthood.
On the other side of my family, my maternal Pinsk-born great-grandmother had 6
children between 1888 and 1903. There was a gap of 4 years because my
great-grandfather was in the United States. All survived to adulthood with my
grandfather being the only borderline case - he was a victim of polio as an
infant, but he lived to be more than 73.
Areas hard hit by epidemics - influenza, diphtheria, etc. would show a higher
mortality rate for children because they have a less-developed immune system.
This was especially true prior to the rise and availability of vaccinations.
Once the data for Czernowitz is available, it will need to be overlaid with
known outbreaks of illness for a clearer picture since specific causation would
alter the average life-span projections.
