For what it's worth:
My Fessler family members, born in Dorna after 1900, used these nicknames:
- Jacob, called Kubschu
- Emanuel, called Munu
- Isidor, called Isu
- Oscar, called Schiku
- Salomon, called Salo
- Israel, called Srulik
and my cousin's husband was
- Friedrich, called Fritz [Klipper]
On the other side of my family [Poland], my great grand-aunt married a Jewish fellow from Galatz, Romania. His name was Emanuel but he was always called Manole by the family. Clearly a different influence on the diminutive than above. More like Manolo Blahnik.
Re: Mitzi - a girl's name, it is a variant of Miriam (Hebrew). Mitzi is German, and the meaning of Mitzie is "star of the sea". [Don't quote me - this is an on-line name history source.] Mimi is also a variant of Miriam.
What it the origin of the name Mirtza? Is it also a variant of Miriam? I had a Putila-born cousin called Minnie in the US but her name in Bukovina was Mirtza.

Only in Czernowitz names - or so I believe :
Burschi, Dolfi, Salo, Schnuky and Igo.
This is to my friend Igo Nussbaum who lived on Russischegasse 52
Deported to Transnistria and never came back:
I had a friend named Igo,
He was my best amigo
And wherever he go,
You can be sure that me go.

Similarly, My grandfather's name was Leo but my grandmother called him Soniu
or Zoniu or perhaps Zuniu? He was born in suceava but resided in Czernowitz.
Can someone tell me what that means?
Mitzi
