The title of Hardy's Email sounds like the title of a fascinating book.
I remember just such a picture, except that it was not a photograph,
but reality. In the winter of 1944 - 45, my father worked in Gliboka
and only came home about every 10 to 14 days for two days.
One day, during my father's absence, my mother received an order
telling her, that on a given day and time, she had to present herself
at a certain office to be sent to fell trees.
Since I was only seven years old and she had no one to leave me with,
she took me with her when she went to the designated office.
A few women, all of them Ukrainian and most of them from the villages,
were already waiting, when we got there.
As soon as we walked in, some of the women came over to my mother
and told her that she could not take a child with her.
To this my mother answered that she had no one to leave me with.
Among themselves the women also talked about the fact
that my mother was small and frail looking.

After a while a Nachalnik (official) came in to the room.
As soon as he sat down behind his desk, a number of the women
went over to him and started telling him in angry voices that he
could not
send my mother to fell trees;
she had a small child she could neither take with her nor leave behind,
she was small and frail and could not do heavy work and moreover,
she was a "Panyeh" (lady). So adamant were these women,
that the nachalnik meekly gave in and my mother and I went home.
