Dear All,
While we do not have either the funds to restore the "Tempel",
nor the legal means by which we would restore it to the Jewish community,
there is one thing we can do to insure that the building is not further
damaged,
or misused.
Those of us who are American citizens, can write to the
=B3US Commission for the Preservation of Americas=B9 Heritage Abroad=B2
and ask that the =B3Tempel=B2 be put on their list.
Is there anyone among our members, who is willing to undertake this task?
The US Commission for the Preservation of Americas=B9 Heritage Abroad
does not provide funds for the preservation of properties on their list,
But its goal is to preserve documents, memorials, cemeteries and cultural
buildings=20
Important to America=B9s heritage.
You can read about the commission and its goals on their website:
http://www.heritageabroad.gov/
Among other things this website states that:
The Commission is an independent agency of the Government
of the United States of America. It was established by U.S. Public Law
99-83.=20
The law directs the Commission to identify and report on cemeteries,
monuments=20
and historic buildings in Eastern and Central Europe that are associated
with the heritage of U.S. citizens, particularly endangered properties,
And obtain, in cooperation with the Department of State, assurances from
the governments of the region that the properties will be protected and
preserved.
While there seem to be good relations between the US government and
Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, it is worth trying to see what we ca=
n
accomplish.
