The tar is not washed away, nor was the soil on the cobblestones.
This is the point were the Brauhausgasse, the Fechnergasse
and the Veteranengasse intersect.
The Veteranengasse, later called strada Banatului, is probably
the steepest street in Czernowitz. Every snowy day, I went down it
on a sled, which I later had to pull up.
That was the price, the boys exacted for letting me sled with them.
I was told that to this day, all the children sled this street.
That is why the street is so worn.
And why is the car parked at the corner and at the left side of the
street?
Because if he moved forward, or parked on the right, he would roll down
and would end up on the Neuweltgasse.
The tall building in back of the pink houses, is probably
Schmiedgasse #10
the first house I lived in, now part of the medical school.
