Then came the periodical Jew butchering and all were equal=20
once more.
  The were also conversions :

Since I was born in a religious family, who spoke Yiddish, kept an =
orthodox way of life and educated the children in Jewish "holy" =
traditional culture, let me make two comments.
  1. The division between the "emancipated" and the traditional segments =
of the Czernowitzer Jews was not the consequence and the division =
between rich and poor. There were rich or affluent orthodox people, and =
likewise poor "modern" people.
  2. The "emancipated" Jews did not attempt to have intimate =
relationship with the orthodox, probably - as I cannot speak for them, =
not being born in their society- also because they did not have a common =
language, in the sense of similar subjects and opinions to foster a =
close connection, in addition to some who looked down on the orthodox as =
uneducated etc.=20

At the same time, the orthodox were proud of their heritage, called =
the modern Jews "Daitschen," and mocked their inability to read the =
prayers in Hebrew, reciting the Kaddish in the Temple by reading from a =
Sidur printed in latin characters, and the other customs, such as the =
organ music in the Temple and the special hat of the "Rabbiner," =
behaving like the "Goiim." Hence it was a "two-ways" estrangement.
