[Cz-L] "Looking for Celan"

Last Saturday we went to the Romanian Cultural Institute to attend an
evening dedicated to Celan, with poetry, two films and music.
It started with an introduction, read by the director of the film "Im
Süden meiner Seele" the second film to be shown , then some poems were
recited, fairly well.
The first film, "Gegenlichter. Suche nach Paul Celan" by Katharina Mihm
was a big dissapointment. It was extremely amateurish, had really hardly
something to do with the subject, and Celan was definitely , neither
approached nor found. The first take showed Celan's "real" house, not
the one where the sign is, for about 5 long minutes. One take which also
went on and on, showing the tops of the tops of some Parisian roofs, and
was repeated... One more interesting take of a Catalan translator
talking about the difficulty of translating Celan, and that he needed
sometimes months to find the right translation for a sentence.
The film was followed musical interludes, with very modernistic music,
dedicated to Celan, by a Romanian- Israeli composer, Gabriel Iranyi,
then an intermission and a small reception.

The evening continued with another set of similar music, by a Romanian
composer, Cornel Taranu, also dedicated to Celan. Maybe this type of
music with its sets of torn sounds, better reflects the torn soul of the
poet.
The second film by Frieder Schuller "Im Süden meiner Seele" - in the
south of my soul -is a very different film, already 20 years old,
rendering quite well the two happier years of Celan's life in Bucharest,
the influence of his hedonistic friends who enjoy life to the full, easy
women, a love affair. However, towards the end of the film, he meets a
young shepherd, and with his help, crosses the border into Hungary. The
shepherd, homesick, returns home. Celan continues his journey. The music
to this film was also written by Taranu.

Quite a few people agreed with our rather critical opinions, some left
earlier.

All this being said, it was really an attempt to come closer to Celan.
What he wrote in his poems leaves a lot open to interpretation. But when
they are well recited, the impact on the audience is direct and
overwhelming.

P.S. My mother broke some ribs, was 2 weeks in hospital, was too busy to
complete this review properly. Sorry to be so late.
