Dear Mimi,
At the age of 90 I placed my father in a nursing home where some of the boarders were German speakers from Bukovina.
When word got out that my father was in the nursing home, an old man came over and addressed my father in German “Herr Rindner I remember you, you used to drive a Buick with a radio in the car”.
I never knew this, when I asked my father about this, his response was “so what”
I know that very few people had radios in their homes at that time.
My father always wore a suit, vest and tie, his shoes were always polished, mit Ein Glanz.(Goyish ??)

Not quite true! At least not in Czernowitz!.
First, no one was truly rich, no one had a car, no one had a villa in Sinaia.
We tried to speak Goyish, not completely successfully.
We dressed Goyish? Were not the best seamstresses and tailors Jewish?
We did not behave Goyish, we behaved "modern."
The same about our way of life.
Look Goyish? Mit aza nooz? (with such a nose?)
Not separate from Jews, we ate at Friedmans, bought Pastrami at Steinmetz,
closed our stores on Saturday, opened them on Sunday afternoon, learned
Yiddish from Steingarg's fables.....
It is also not true that half the list members would not speak or write to you.
It is my experience that most of us judged people by their character and education,
not by where they lived.
