Dear all,
I remember the song in all mentioned versions as well from my childhood in post-war Germany. It is from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn", a collection of folk songs from 1806/08 by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano. A typical example for German Romantics. The tune is from Johann Friedrich Reichardt, 1781.
Bianca's version is the original:
Schlaf, Kindlein, schlaf,
Der Vater hüt die Schaf
Sleep, baby, sleep
The father guards the sheep
Cornel remembers a satirical version:
Sleep, baby, sleep,
The father is a sheep
Mimi's version is original as well.
Cockchafer fly!
The father is away at war
The mother is in Pomerania
And Pomerania has burned down
This is the version I heared often in my childhood. What a lulaby for children!
As a child I never saw a cockchafer (or may bug); they appeared again but still are a very rare species.

The Struwwelpeter, mentioned by Mimi, still is on sale. Decide by yourself if the book is good for kids or not.
