Hi Ljuba! All I can think is that Hertzog was in one of the very few Austrian units that were involved in gas warfare. Many of my family came back with no problems. Best,Cornel

Hi Cornel,
Three months ago Charles uncle passed away in Israel, he was the last of this generation in our family , I had long conversations with Hertzog on my visits to Israel to try and establish some family history as Charles is the oldest of all the cousins , I am not sure but I think my mother in-law was the second child in the family . Hertzog was quite clear that the men that returned from the first world war we all mainly sick from the gas and could not work, and also passed away at a young age. Unfortunately there no one left now to ask any more questions and our family are very sad. We thank you all for putting so much effort into the information you publish in your emails , it makes feel that we are not so alone and isolated in Australia , Charles was so young when he went through the trauma of World War 2 sometimes he feel that his memory is playing tricks on him , but you help verify the pain of separation and loss a young child of 5 years still feels today from his home, family, and security of love.
I am still hoping that someone will have some further details about my beloved mother in-law Lisa .
Best Regards Ljuba German.

Hi Ljuba....re your question about returning soldiers. I may be wrong, but none of the information I have seen implies that Austrian troops were involved in gas warfare. From my family records, they helped defend the town from bands of mainly mounted raiders and when Romania took over people went back to work. Cornel
